ED in bicyclists?
ED in bicyclists?
Question
I’m a hobby cyclist, and ride several hours each weekend. Recently I’ve noticed that my erections aren’t as good as I think they should be. Is there any connection with my biking? I’m 54 years old and I’m not overweight.
Answer
In 2004 doctors in Seattle questioned over 450 male cyclists about this problem after they had completed a 320K event. As many as one in 25 of them had difficulty with erections one week after the event; a third of these still had problems after one month. Mne who rode a mountain bike rather than a road bike were more susceptible, as were those riding with the handlebars at the same height as the saddle, or higher. Discomfort or numbness around the base of the penis during the ride was experienced by a third of those who subsequently had temporary “erectile dysfunction” (ED).
You may be able to avoid future difficulties if you ride a road instead of a mountain bike, keep the handlebar height low, and use a saddle without a “cutout”. If the problem persists, see your doctor, as ED is sometimes an indication that all is not well with your smaller arteries.
